Training that bridges keys and readers

Which courses or certs have helped your locksmiths map mechanical skills — master keying, door prep, code checks — into electronic access workflows like OSDP readers, mobile credentials, and audit trails? We’re converting 24 classroom doors this quarter to a hybrid setup (RIM with electrified strikes tied to a small cloud controller), and I’m looking for programs that build an integration mindset so a tech can move from pinning charts to provisioning access groups without breaking egress or audit requirements.

@Chris, the biggest leap for my crew was pairing ALOA’s 2‑day Electronic Access Control class with a bench build: a plywood mock of your RIM + electrified strike + OSDP reader tied to the same small cloud controller you’ll use, then mapping your master key tiers straight into access levels and testing audit pulls. Small caveat from classrooms: strike inrush can sag reader voltage — give the reader its own supply or add a timed relay. If you’re going OSDP, a quick SIA primer helped too: OSDP Boot Camp — do you have a bench rig set up before rolling to the 24 doors?

We got the best lift from SIA’s OSDP Boot Camp paired with a quick lab where techs map a master key chart into access levels — “treat access levels like keyways” — then commission an OSDP address and pull an audit report on the bench door @helen_k45 mentioned. If budget’s tight, the free SIA OSDP materials help a lot: Open Supervised Device Protocol (OSDP) - Security Industry Association — want a simple template for the key-plan-to-access-levels map?

On a similar 24-classroom RIM + electrified strike rollout, we paired DHI’s electrified hardware basics with the vendor’s free cloud controller course (Brivo University: https://university.brivo.com) and did a quick “inrush vs hold current” demo with a clamp meter so techs could size power right… If any of those doors are rated, keep it fail-secure with single-motion egress — , mixing that up with cloud features causes call-backs; which controller are you leaning toward?
