Restoring a Victorian Padlock

I’ve recently taken on the task of restoring a beautiful Victorian padlock, and it’s incredible how much history these mechanisms hold. The original brass was tarnished and the internal workings were gummed up, but with careful cleaning and a small dose of machine oil, it’s like the lock has revived from the past. I’d love to hear any tips on preservation methods or experiences you’ve had with similar restorations.

It’s amazing how a little care can breathe new life into a padlock. I restored one a while back and found that using a mixture of vinegar and salt really helped with the tarnish. Just make sure to rinse it well afterward to prevent corrosion — those older locks can be pretty sensitive.

Sounds like you’re off to a great start! I did a similar restoration recently and found using a bit of lemon juice can really help with tarnish too — just like magic! Have you tried any specific preservation methods yet, like wax coating afterward?
